Heavy Metal Concentration in Serum of Rural Inhabitants

Abstract
In order to provide some basic data for the establishment of control measure for the hazardous health effects that could be caused by heavy metals, the author determined the level of heavy metals (Cr, Pb, Cd, Mn and Cu) in serums of 201 rural
inhabitants in Kyungsangnamdo. The graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry and Zeeman atomic absorption spectrometer were used to quantify to concentrations of heavy metals and blood sampling was done from July to September, 1993.
The
results were summerized as follows.
1. The mean concentrations of heavy metals in serum.
(1) Pb : 3.24¡¾1.04§¶/dl
(2) Mn : 3.17¡¾0.85§¶/dl
(3) Cr : 0.24¡¾0.15§¶/dl
(4) Cd : 0.16¡¾0.08§¶/dl
(5) Cu : 53.35¡¾15.55§¶/dl
2. There were statistically significant differences in serum lead, cadmium and copper levels by residential area (P¡´0.01¡µ, and cadmium level in serum by smoking habits(P¡´0.05¡µ.
3. There were statistically significant differences in serum cadmium and copper levels by age group (P¡´0.05¡µ, and manganese and copper levels in serum by sex(P¡´0.05¡µ.
4. While a positive correlation was observed between concentrations of lead and cadmium in serum(P¡´0.01¡µ, negative correlations were observed between concentration of lead and copper in serum, and between concentrations of cadmium and copper
in
serum(P¡´0/05¡µ.
